Refractive Lens Exchange Edison
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a type of vision correction surgery that replaces your eye’s natural crystalline lens with an artificial lens to restore crisp, clear vision. It is often performed as an alternative to LASIK, PRK, LASEK, or Epi-Lasik. RLE has also become a common treatment method for patients with presbyopia.
Refractive Lens Exchange for Older People
If you have cataracts, RLE may be an ideal solution to restore your sight. Cataracts start out small but grow larger over time, eventually clouding your vision and affecting your quality of life. In the early stages, cataracts may not yet be bothersome. However, this may be the perfect time to consider RLE. Waiting until your cataracts are large and intrude on your vision may require cataract surgery. With early cataracts, RLE can help you avoid cataract surgery later on.
RLE is becoming the treatment of choice for many older patients because of the newer accommodating or multifocal intraocular lenses, such as:
- ReSTOR
- Tecnis
When you choose RLE, you can expect a dramatic improvement in distance vision and enhanced near vision. You’ll find you can quickly return to working on a computer, doing close work, reading, and other activities you enjoyed before your vision was affected by cataracts.
RLE is also an effective treatment option for individuals with presbyopia, or aging eyes. After age 40, your eye’s natural lens begins to grow rigid, compromising “accommodation,” or the ability to focus on all distances. RLE can replace your natural lens with an IOL that will provide you with the ability to see clearly once again.
Refractive Lens Exchange for Younger People
Many young people turn to LASIK to correct common vision issues such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. In cases of extreme farsightedness, LASIK may not be an option. RLE then becomes a good method for restoring distance vision.
If a mono-focal lens is used, distance vision may be corrected, but reading glasses will likely be needed for close vision. If a multifocal lens is used, reading glasses may not be needed at all, or very infrequently.
