LASIK is the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure. The procedure involves using an excimer laser to reshape your cornea so that light will properly focus on your retina. For many people who have suffered with poor vision for years, LASIK corrects visual acuity while reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK Benefits

LASIK offers many benefits, the most welcome being improved vision immediately following your procedure with little to no discomfort. At Patel Eye Associates in Edison, New Jersey, our board-certified ophthalmologists have used LASIK to correct refractive errors in the vision of thousands of local New Jersey residents.

When considering LASIK to correct your vision issue, always carefully choose your eye surgeon. Laser eye surgeons in NJ Dr. Hitesh K. Patel and Dr. Himanshu S. Shah are highly trained and skilled in performing a comprehensive LASIK examination to determine if your eyes are healthy, how much laser ablation (tissue removal) your eyes require, and precisely what type of vision correction is needed. Our doctors will also test for Dry Eye Syndrome and we will use a corneal topographer device to ‘map’ your unique visual irregularities, helping us attain more precise results.

The LASIK Procedure

Dr. Patel and Dr. Shah will use a microkeratome blade to create a thin flap in the cornea. The flap is created with a tiny hinge so it can be folded out of the way, allowing our eye surgeons to remove a small amount of corneal tissue using an excimer laser. The removal of this tissue reshapes the cornea so it can more accurately reflect light on the retina for better vision. The flap is then replaced, acting as a natural bandage while the eye heals.

If you are nearsighted, the goal is to flatten a cornea which is too steep. If you are farsighted, the goal is to steepen a cornea which is too flat. If astigmatism is causing blurry vision, LASIK can correct it by smoothing out an irregular corneal shape.

LASIK is fast and virtually painless. Performed on an outpatient basis, the actual surgery time is about five minutes, but plan to set aside several hours for the entire procedure.

Other LASIK variations are available, allowing Dr. Patel and Dr. Shah to customize the best treatment plan for your unique refractive error.
