Crystalens

Crystalens is an intraocular lens (IOL) with an excellent success rate in correcting vision distorted by cataracts. Because Crystalens is flexible like the eye’s natural lens, you can expect to regain the visual acuity you once enjoyed when your eyes were younger.

Edison, New Jersey Cataract Surgeons Dr. Hitesh K. Patel and Dr. Himanshu S. Shah will work closely with you to determine which cataract lens option will restore optimal vision. Crystalens is only one of several IOL brands approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Am I a Candidate for Crystalens?

In general, you may be a good candidate for Crystalens if your vision is impaired by cataracts, hyperopia (farsightedness), or presbyopia , which occurs when the lens of the eye becomes more rigid with age.

Of the three conditions, cataracts are the most threatening to good sight. Left untreated, cataracts will continue to impact your vision, causing the lenses to harden. Cataracts must be surgically removed to prevent blindness. Often, you can improve your vision after cataract removal with glasses and contact lenses. When Crystalens is implanted, you may find you no longer need corrective lenses to see well.

How Crystalens Works

Crystalens mimics the movement of your eye’s natural lens – flexing, bending, and coordinating the curvature of the outer membrane, called the cornea, with the crystalline lens. This movement causes “accommodation,” or a thickening and thinning of the lens so the eyes can adjust to various distances. Accommodation is responsible for focusing the image on your retina, where it is turned into a chemical signal and interpreted by your brain.
